Montgomery - Gibbs Airport (ICAO: KMYF) is a public airport in San Diego, California, United States, six miles north of downtown San Diego, very close to Miramar MCAS. Basically it is in the middle of Miramar and San Diego International Airport (KSAN).
The airport has three runways, one public and two private helipads. The runways are 28 Right/10 Left-28 Left/10 Right parallels and 5/23, but monstly is used R28R.
Here I've found many Flying schools and private companies and associations; I choosed LTFSD to have my first experience in this airport, it's not the only one, but the relationship was very friendly and that's why i was well oriented there.
The field was named for John J. Montgomery, an aviation pioneer who in 1884-1886 made the first manned, controlled, heavier-than-air flights in the United States from Otay Mesa south of San Diego starting with a glider designed in 1883. and for William Gibbs 1910-Present who originally founded the airport in 1940. Montgomery - Gibbs Executive Airport is one of the nation's busiest airports for small aircraft and has a number of flying clubs, flight schools, plus business turboprops and jets based there. The San Diego Fire Department bases aircraft there.
Mexican restaurant over the apron |
It's very interesting to know that King Schools, Inc. is based nearby and its aircraft are based at the airport. Since summer 2009, King Schools (in conjunction with Cessna) has been flight-testing the prototype Cessna 162 Skycatcher Light-Sport Aircraft at or around the airport.
The airport has a sort of Terminal, very nice, upstairs there is a very nice Mexican Restaurant where you can see all the view of the crowded aprons and flyght operations: the airport activity is very busy and you can see flying everything, from helicopters to sports aircrafts, General Aviation, from Business Jets to historic Biplanes. The enviroment and ambientation of the restaurant and of all the buildings is based on Aviation Spirit, very accurate.
Me, after the flight. |
After you contact the ground control, you feel aware that the airport has many flights and ground based aircrafts, in particular GA like Cessna 172. The runway 28 R is very long for my PA28, the parallel is closed, the threshold moved far away from the beginning of concrete and before me we have two other aircrafts, another one behind. We contact Tower for take off clearence, we climb at 1000 ft westbound and we follow a kind of Corridor up to the cost, after that we were able to descend to 500 ft and follow the costline southbound before switching with San Diego International.
For any other info, you can contact me.
Here the video of the flight, just a simple footage.
